a great purchase , a great read, my book arrived in perfect condition (even though it was an ex display purchase,)
so it was a great price, i can definately recommend this seller, and i will buy from them again,
i have read other books about Andre ,but as this was written by himself, it was more personal, and not just about the tennis tournaments he won or lost, there is a lot about his personal life aswell,All in all a good read for tennis fans and Agassi fans,

Enlightening

A fascinating read. This book really allows the reader to understand Andre Agassi's character and how it was formed by a very driven Father. His attempts at rebellion can be understood. His constant ambition to retire from tennis is comical, given, as he explains it, it started at the age of 19! The shallowness of Brooke Shields is highlighted as is the wonderful love he seems to have achieved with Steffi Graf.
His views on his fellow players is also very funny to read.
This is a very good book as it shows a very talented and successful man openly showing his sensitive side and explaining just how 'hurt' he was during various times of his career. You also get to understand how important his close friends were and who they were! Its also clear how Agassi has learned the value of discipline, education and respect despite in his youthfulness displaying none of these characteristics.

Definitely worth a read!!!

Almost there...

This is the much-hyped "auto" biography from Andre Agassi (actually it was ghostwritten by J.R. Moehringer, following the trend of celebrity autobiographies that weren't actually written by the subject of the book). I came to this book as a huge fan of tennis, both as a player and spectator, and wanted to find out more about the story of Mr. Agassi, whose life off the court has often been as colourful as his life on it.

The book begins at the end, in a sense - the end of his professional tennis career, anyway - when, hampered by a congenital back condition, his body wracked by years of abuse at the highest level of the sport, he plays a doozy of a match at the U.S. Open. We then slip back in time to his early years, where we meet his father, a sterotypical aggressive, hugely insecure idiot (at least that's the way he comes across here), living out his own frustrations and lack of success through his children.

The stories of Agassi's childhood friendships are wonderful and charming, but we see the strain start to take its toll as the pressure of life as a tennis pro begins to increase, and the harsh, cut-throat world of the tour begins to emerge. The vaunted drug confession aren't so much a shock as an expectation - people close to the tour know that there has been shady stuff going on in tennis for many years, but it is good to hear a confession like this, and it will perhaps encourage others to speak up. The book is not always true to its title - it shirks some of Agassi's frankly shocking, boorish behaviour at the Davis Cup, where partisan U.S. emotions often overtook him, particularly when he was in the stands and was hurling the most shameful abuse at the opposing side.

Still, Agassi comes across as thoughtful and intelligent, and it's interesting to hear how he has devoted his life following his career to charitable causes, rather than just sitting back and counting his millions. I could do without some of the awful new age aphorisms that pepper the book, which presumably come from the ghostwriter rather than Agassi himself: "Any hour can be our darkest or our finest...it's our choice." Really? We get to choose whether ANY hour is our finest? Or our darkest? Or "The shower sends warm blood sluicing through my veins." I'd be a bit worried if he needed a shower in order to get warm blood "sluicing" through his veins, as he'd be dead if it wasn't already happening! "What you feel doesn't matter...it's what you DO that makes you brave" is another interesting non-sequitur.

Sure, it's a fairly lightweight read, but what do you expect from celebrity biographies? Just enjoy the ride - it's entertaining and full of fun. Whether you're a tennis fan or not, this is still an amusing and diverting book. Enjoy!

Im not finished but so far...

Im a tennis fan, young, so didnt have the chance of seeing Connors, McEnroe and others playing. Im more a new era fan, Agassi, Sampras, Federer, Kuerten.
I gotta say how interesting it's reading about the evolution of the game, and also about the human part of the players, they are also human beings, with problems, tears, smiles.
Finally I gotta say that im maybe a little angry with Agassi because of his statements about tennis: "he hates tennis". Maybe that's true, but tennis has given him everything he has, he should show a little respect.
If you're a tennis fan, do not hesitate to purchase this book.
