At least that is what my wife says - and she kept reading me bits. The book does 'what it says on the label' in accessible language with humour. It helps you understand your own and other dogs - every home should have a copy and a dog to go with it!

A fascinating book that leans a wee bit towards the academic but provides insights into dog psychology and the world as they see it. Alexandra sets a test for her degree students who, much to their chagrin, are out-witted by pigeons. Thus demonstrating that people constantly fall back on overly complicated experience to solve or understand problems rather than looking afresh and discovering new ways of understanding what we see. Then... she goes on through the book doing exactly what her students have done.. relying on the restrictive limitations of her trade (science) to study and explain dog behaviour, cognition and psychology. Some mistakes were made in the experiments she devised with consequent misunderstood outcomes. However on the whole it is a brilliant attempt to solve one of the poorest kept secrets in the animal kingdom.. animals know far more than we do and that dogs, who are so tolerant of our ignorance, deserve far more credit than they are generally given.

I read a review in the Oldie about this book and thought that it might join the other Dog Psychology books on the shelf, all bought in a vain attempt to understand and maybe even tame a very individual Lakeland Terrier.

The book is far more readable than the Terrier herself and more readable than most of the other dog behaviour books we have. The writing assumes a degree of will to understand the way a dog's mind works and is serious enough to be taken seriously but readable enough for most people of moderate intelligence. Has it worked for the dog? Not yet but we hopeful and we Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Knowdo understand why she is as she is and it helps us chuckle more and sigh less.

i have just finished reading this book and really wish that all nervy dog owners would read it. It starts off all scientific although it really does have a lot of answers to anyone who has ever looked at their dog and thought what the hell is he thinking when he looks at me that way.
